Today I wanted to take a look at the Occlusion Culling system that comes with Unity 3 Beta 2. It is drop dead simple to use, but would benefit from a few tweaks. For starters, I would like to see some sort of grid overlay on my scene so I can gauge visually what is going on before I spend any amount of time performing the occlusion culling just to find out that it is not quite right.
As stated in the video, I took a large scene, a terrain that was 2000 x 2000 x 600, and performed occlusion culling with the default settings but on preview and not production. Now I understand that this is a large scene, but one hour to complete seemed to be a bit long for a preview. Further testing will be needed before I pass my final verdict on the system, but I have to say, that the end result is quite nice.
For those that are still awaiting their beta, enjoy your preview, and those that have had a chance to play around with it already. What is your opinion on the system?
