Model Orientation

Is there a common direction a model should be oriented before I export it out?

I'm going through Tutorial 66 of the Hack n Slash series, and the free sword model that I downloaded as a .3ds, converted to an .fbx, behaves odd.

No issues creating the Mount object and "childing" the model to it, but after I get everything looking good in the editor and enter play mode, the sword is pointing off, oddly, to the side.

I've slewed around the mount point which didn't seem to do much, and I've slewed around the sword object which also didn't seem to fix it. I also tried changing the transform content of the prefab.

I'm guessing it's a crap model, but before I just go get a different one, I'm thinking I should just create my own primative model to complete that tutorial. I might learn a bit about Blender at the same time. However, I'm not seeing anything about common orientation.
